Tylopilus pseudoscaber (Seer.) Smith & Thiers syn. Porphyrellus pseudoscaber (Seer.) Singer Cap 5-15cm across, convex, becoming flatter in age; very dark earth brown to olive-brown or vinaceous brown; dry, minutely hairy to fibrous. Tubes 1.5-2cm, subdecurrent becoming deeply depressed with age; pale grayish brown, bruising green-blue. Pores small, round; dark yellow-brown. Stem 40-120 x 10-30mm, solid stuffed, becoming larger toward the base; brown outside, white within, often blackening with age at base; dry, minutely felty, sometimes longitudinally and irregularly lined. Flesh white, bruising bright blue then reddish to dull brown. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, 12-18 x 6-7.5µ. Deposit reddish-brown. Habitat scattered or in groups on the ground or along old roads in hardwood and mixed forests. Quite common. Found in Europe and in eastern North America, the Pacific Northwest, and northern California. Season September-November. Edible-but not good. |
